A Life-Changing Week of Volunteering

A Perfect
Coincidence

After spending time in Bali, I had already planned to explore northern Thailand. Just before leaving, I met Nick, an Englishman who shared his experience of living in Chiang Mai and told me about a project he had started there: The Daly Foundation (Ava House) (Google Maps). His passion for the place was contagious, and he invited me to visit. The timing couldn’t have been better, and I knew I had to see it for myself. What was meant to be a brief visit turned into one of the most meaningful weeks of my journey.

Life at the Orphanage

Located just 25 minutes from Chiang Mai’s city center, The Daly Foundation (Ava House) is home to 25 children, most of whom come from remote mountain villages near Chiang Rai. Some are orphans, while others have families facing hardships that prevent them from providing proper care. Despite these challenges, the children radiate happiness and gratitude for being part of such a close-knit community.

During my week there, I fully immersed myself in their daily routine: waking up early, sharing meals, and seeing them off to school. In the afternoons, once they returned, I helped them with their English, played football with the boys, and spent time with them in ways that were both simple and meaningful. Whether we were gathered around the table for a meal or playing a game under the fading sunlight, every moment deepened my connection to this place and the warmth of its community.

The Heart Behind the Foundation

The orphanage is run by Dang and his wife, Tang, who have dedicated their lives to these children. They are more than caretakers, they are parental figures, providing love, guidance, and stability to ensure the kids grow up in a safe and nurturing environment. Watching them interact with the children, it was clear that The Daly Foundation is not just an orphanage, it’s a family.

Exciting Plans for the Future

The Daly Foundation is looking to expand, improving its facilities and increasing food production for the children, particularly through vegetable farming. Recognizing the importance of English in their future opportunities, they warmly welcome volunteers who can help teach the language. Additionally, the founder Nick, now based in Ubud, Bali, is planning to open another orphanage soon, extending the foundation’s impact even further.

How
you can Help

If you ever find yourself in Chiang Mai, I highly recommend visiting The Daly Foundation (Ava House). Whether you want to volunteer, meet the children, donate, or simply bring some chocolate to brighten their day, every gesture is deeply appreciated.
For more information or to support the project, visit their
Website or contact Dang directly on WhatsApp at +66 964022858.
This experience was one of the most rewarding of my travels, and I hope more people get the chance to witness the kindness and resilience that make this place so special.
